Cambridge Pro Bono Project

Since its inauguration in 2010, the CPP has partnered with dozens of bodies, including NGOs, charities, barristers’ chambers and courts, to produce research targeted at a range of public interest matters.

The CPP is a research centre, not a legal clinic. It works on a model which draws on the subject-matter expertise of graduate doctoral researchers, and Faculty experts, to produce reports on a wide range of public interest matters, including in the fields of public international law, criminal law, and domestic British public law.

The CPP’s research is usually presented in the form of a research report.

The three core objectives of the CPP are:

  • to provide postgraduate students with an opportunity to engage with the law in a practical way, and to develop the skills and values central to the provision of pro bono legal work;
  • to provide an avenue for the Faculty of Law to make a meaningful and practical contribution to public interest law; and
  • to facilitate collaboration between the Faculty of Law and legal practitioners and organisations undertaking legal work in a pro bono capacity.

To these ends, we welcome project submissions from individuals and organisations undertaking public interest work in a pro bono capacity.

The CPP does not, however, advise individuals on their rights directly, neither can we represent persons in legal disputes. Our research reports are produced for informational purposes only. They do not constitute any form of legal advice and should not be relied on, or treated as a substitute for legal advice tailored to specific circumstances.

If you would like further information on the CPP or are interested in working with us – either as a project partner or a volunteer student – please read our FAQ here.  Or, you may contact the Executive Committee at cpp@law.cam.ac.uk. You can also follow CPP on Twitter or Facebook.

If you would like to learn more about how the CPP structures its research teams, and the typical timeline for production of a CPP research report, please see our FAQ.
